NASA probe allows for visualization of solar storms

You’re looking at a computer simulation of a solar cyclone, constructed using data from the orbiting Solar Dynamics Observatory and a Swedish-based solar telescope. The cyclone is composed of plasma swirling among the solar magnetic fields.

These solar cyclones may help to answer a question that scientists had long wondered about: why is the sun’s atmosphere more than 300 times hotter than its surface? Scientists previously thought that the heat came from the surface of the sun, but how it traveled to the surface was unclear. Now, researchers think that these solar storms, as many as 11,000 at once, funnel heat from the sun’s surface to the corona, as they reported in Nature.

Can You Spot What’s Wrong With These Urban Scenes?

It’s a good thing that Robert Rickhoff isn’t involved in any actual urban planning. Put in charge of a construction crew, he’d probably build a volleyball court in the middle of a highway or erect ramps so cars can catch some air.

Just such questionable public amenities are presented in Rickhoff’s graduate thesis at ArtEZ in the Netherlands, appropriately titled “Out of Place.” The surreal series of manipulated photos introduce a metropolis in which the architecture is twisted to spawn new, strange functions.

Today is the birthday of Murray Gell-Mann, who is credited with (co)discovering the quark in the same year as George Zweig. Gell-Mann, however, deserves all the credit for naming the quark in 1964-he created the name out of a non-sense word from James Joyce’s novel Finnegans Wake. Born September 15, 1929, Gell-Man was awarded the 1969 Nobel Prize in Physics for his discovery. In addition to the quark, Dr. Gell-Mann had an amazing career-a true pioneer of particle physics. Happy Birthday!

Chinese Giant Salamander

All too often, endangered animals are glamorized. I’ve ranted about how the less-impressive endangered species get so little press before. Sometimes, however, this favoritism is wholly unjustified… Size is not the only thing unique about this river monster. Chinese giant salamanders are also among the few salamanders that make noise. They can whine, hiss, and bark; they may even sound like human babies to some Chinese people. They also have special sensory nodes that run from head to tail in compensation for awful eyesight. Neat.
